Team Videos

Great news! You can now enjoy footage of your favourite football team with the new Team Videos feature. It is available on the latest version of CrowdScores for Android at the Google Play Store. Get your hands on it!

How it works

Firstly, you are now able to see the newly added Videos tab, which allows you to see all kinds of clips that are available from official club YouTube channels. This should include all videos relating to players, the club, the season at large and much, much more.

You can see the title of the video and the date that it was added to YouTube. By clicking on the row, you are able to view and play the actual video on YouTube itself.

In addition, the upcoming release also includes another exciting feature, now allowing you to filter the videos so that they appear on the screen based on their type. Up to now, the available types are All videos and Match Highlights, but the list will keep expanding. Watch this space!

End of Season Review – 2016/17

End of Season Review

With Real Madrid confirmed as back-to-back Champions League winners, and the majority of European Leagues now over, it is the perfect time to give you a quick overview of what has been, by far, the biggest season yet for CrowdScores. Here are our highlights of the 2016-17 season:

1,000,000 Users

We saw an immense growth in the CrowdScores community last season. After starting the season with 150,000 active users, we surpassed 1,000,000 active users in March 2017.

We’ve also seen more and more users getting actively involved, which resulted in a total of 1,541,289 comments on matches over the course of the season.

With the help of everyone we can keep on growing, so please keep on spreading the word!

Most popular match

Any guesses for which was the most popular match on CrowdScores this season?

Real Madrid, Barcelona, La Liga, CrowdScores, iOS App, Live Score, Livescore, Season Review

It was the highly anticipated El Clásico on 23rd April. A huge 37,092 users predicted the outcome of the game, of which 38% were correct.

The end to end game, which finished with a dramatic last minute winner from Lionel Messi, inspired CrowdScores users who made a total of 9476 comments during the match, including 315 comments reacting to Messi’s final goal. This works out at a staggering 105 comments per minute during the game.

We’re covering more games than ever…

We covered a total of 49,944 games from 337 competitions. We also added a host of new competitions for you to follow including the AFC Champions League, Algerian Ligue 1 and the Indian’s Women League.

We will continue to improve our coverage next so CrowdScores users can follow more and more leagues from around the world.

Translations – Get CrowdScores into your language

CrowdScores is currently used by 1 million users a month in more than 200 countries. It is our mission to allow fans to share football data at all levels of the game and in order to do this, we need your help.

We are looking for users of the app to help CrowdScores provide a better service to regions across the globe. Our app is currently available in 15 languages on each platform (iOS and Android) and we want to grow our coverage even further.

There are two ways you can help contribute to our translations; you can either help add a new language to the app or improve the languages we currently have.

CrowdScores Passes 1 Million Users!

In 2012, with just a team of 2, CrowdScores was formed to give football fans a platform to share information about the match they are watching. Today, with a team of 21, we’re pleased to announce that more than 1 million people use that platform. That’s 1 million users who are a part of CrowdScores to not only consume football data but also share it with other fans around the World.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who uses CrowdScores to get their football scores, contribute information or discuss matches. Since the release of the iOS and Android apps, 200,000 goals, 70,000 cards and more than 1,500,000 comments have been contributed by our amazing userbase. We couldn’t do it without you.

Match Highlights

Match Highlights

We are very excited to announce that this week we will begin rolling out match highlights on both our iOS and Android apps. Here’s all you need to know about the release…


Soon after the match has finished highlights from the match will appear at the top of the info tab in a ‘Highlights’ widget. The video is hosted on YouTube and has been integrated seamlessly into CrowdScores so that you can watch the video without having to leave the app.

Again, normally within a couple of hours of the full-time whistle, the highlights of the match will appear. The difference on iOS is that the video will appear at the top of the match timeline.

Initially match highlights will only appear for La Liga matches. In the next few weeks, we will be adding highlights from more leagues and competitions from around the World.

The rollout starts from today so keep an eye on App Store and Google Play for the update.

End of Year Review – 2016

2016 has been a busy year at CrowdScores, attracting over one-and-a-half million downloads from football fans around the globe. We have been the number one Sports app in over 20 countries on the App Store/Play Store and we intend to grow that figure and reach out to even more fans in 2017.

It is also the year where we have become a truly global football community, with users from over 200 countries worldwide coming together to share their passion for football on CrowdScores. Here’s a recap of our top highlights:

The Stats


48,213 Live Matches

On an average month, we covered more than 4000 matches. In total we now cover 74 competitions from the English Premier League to the United Football League in the Philippines. The busiest month was in October, where we covered a staggering 5703 matches.

On average there were 2.40 goals scored per game. With 59 goals for club and country in 2016, Lionel Messi was solely responsible for 0.0005% of all goals!

Were CS users right? Yep! 57% of users correctly predicted Real Madrid would come out on top in the Madrid Derby.

Were CS users right? The only Premier League game to feature on this list, and 42% of users correctly predicted Conte’s Blues would take home the three points.

CrowdScores at Google Play Playtime

Last Thursday, CrowdScores was kindly invited to Google Play Playtime at the National Centre for Circus Arts in Shoreditch, London.

The event was for leading Android developers to get tips and learn best practices for growing and succeeding on Google Play Store. It also provided an opportunity for developers to meet members of the Google Play team and share their feedback on the platform.

The day began with a speech from Mark Bennett, the International Director at Google Play. He discussed a number of exciting new features, which included Instant Apps, Android Wear and Universal App Campaigns which are now a major part of our marketing strategy.

Up next was the Group Product Manager of Google Play, Ellie Powers. She discussed the more technical advancements we should look to expect from Android Studio and Firebase amongst other Google technologies.

Lunch brought about an opportunity for Google advocates to bond over Android shaped snacks or fight against one another in an Android style sumo suit. Needless to say, members of the CrowdScores team had a bout.

After lunch, sessions were split up into apps or mobile games. We opted for the app route which began with a session by Hugo Obi the Co-founder of Mailyo. Mailyo is a ‘premier gaming company’ that caters specifically for the African mobile market.

CrowdScores had 200,000 users from Africa in August 2016 so it was interesting to hear Hugo’s insight into the continent’s mobile usage behaviour. One statistic that particularly resonated with us was that 1 billion Android users will be using 2G on 2020. This means that for any application to be successful globally they need to be optimised for users with a limited mobile data budget.

The day concluded with a panel of leading personalities in the mobile world, which featured representatives from King and Deliveroo. The main topic of discussion was the future of mobile and how they thought the industry would change in the future. It was fascinating to hear what they thought was in store for virtual reality, particularly regarding Google VR.

As passionate mobile developers, it was great to be given the opportunity to spend the day amongst so many like-minded people. We are extremely excited to build upon what we learnt at Google Play Playtime in order to improve our users’ experience at CrowdScores.

In the past year, CrowdScores has come on leaps and bounds in the football world. We’ve had more than 200,000 downloads on both our iOS and Android applications which boast rave user reviews.

We consistently provided accurate data faster than our competitors and continue to develop improvements to ensure users are notified of match events as soon as they happen. Our workforce has also doubled in size and we intend to grow even further in 2016.

In this post we’ll discuss our highlights of the year and let you know what we’ve got planned for 2016.

The Stats

Over the course of 2015 our coverage has grown significantly and as a result of this, our user base has too. Here are some facts and figures from the past 12 months;


Our busiest month of the year was October where we covered more than 3000 matches.

53,980 GOALS

Games covered by CrowdScores had an average of 2.52 goals. The quietest month for goals came in June when there were a measly 1606 goal events.


Users were definitely in the Christmas spirit last year as an impressive 31,518 comments came in December alone.


Typical examples of match events are half-time, full-time, cards and substitutions.

21,149,229 REPORTS

On an average month we aggregated 1,762,435 reports in order to bring you the fastest live football scores.


One of our most popular and unique features is the Vidiprinter. Thanks to our users, we are a completely independent football data provider which means that when other apps or sources are not working, we remain unaffected.

On Boxing Day, when BBC’s Final Score and Jeff Stelling and co’s Soccer Saturday Vidiprinters were suffering from a post-Christmas hangover, we experienced no problems whatsoever.

The CrowdScores back-end development team partake in quarterly hackdays where they have the opportunity to work on their own unique projects outside of their usual schedule.

The last Hackday of the year produced mixed results among the team but the highlight was Martyn’s ‘Fastest Pi Scores’. Using our public API, he displayed our football scores on a Raspberry Pi which also read them out loud. Find out more about Martyn’s project here.

The Team

One of the many perks of working at CrowdScores, along with spending half the day creating puns from football players names, is our regular social events. Go-Karting, Table Tennis, FIFA tournaments and Bowling are just some of the hotly contested activities we have organised in 2015. Also, on Thursday nights we have begun playing in a 5-a-side league just down the road from our office.

Fastest Pi Scores

During our recent hackday I wanted to work on a project that utilized our public API to display football scores on a Raspberry Pi. Having worked in the technical services industry for the majority of my career I was interested in finding out what our customer’s experience was like building a basic client side prototype.
First things first, I needed to prepare a fresh Raspian Raspberry pi image. For those who haven’t done this before you can follow the instructions for your respective operating systems here.

I went with Wheezy because I knew the library I’d be using had worked on Wheezy before and I didn’t want to be troubleshooting dependency problems all day.

The Piface display has a nice packaged library that can be installed with the package manager. I wasn’t working in a virtual environment for this project so installing it this way was fine. I also had to enable the SPI interface for the screen to work after updating the OS. I usually just use the pi user for my projects but any sudoer would be fine.

At this point you could also enable ssh or a GUI login depending on your preferred way of working.

Once that was installed I pulled down my client library and installed dependencies.

I had written my client library on my laptop but, after having trouble with installing a geolocation library on the pi, I commented some of the dependencies out for this project as they weren’t really needed.

Next to authorize my requests I place a file in my user’s home directory called .crowdscores containing my API key.

And to test this worked I ran my client script with an interactive python3 shell. If it works I should see my API key and be able to run some of the commands from the client.

As the client library was working as expected I could concentrate on working on the code that controlled the display. There are 4 main parts to the script that controls it.

Screen Object – Directly controls what is displayed on the screen and formats the text so it gets shown correctly without any lingering “Ghost” characters or showing an ugly flashing cursor.

Game Object – This handles storing the score and team names of each game. It creates a screen instance for when it needs to display information.

Matches Object – The Matches object is responsible for interacting with the Crowdscores API and pulling down a list of matches to iterate over. It’s hard coded to check for matches that started within the last 3 hours although this was just an arbitrary figure I chose during the hack day to make sure that there were some games to display.

Main loop – It originally had some sleeps built in to display each of the scores for an arbitrary amount of time but as I finished this project with a couple of hours to spare I had some time to work on improving the project’s features.

As a bonus feature I wanted the scores to be read out loud, not just shown on the screen . After a quick google search, I came across a likely sounding library called pyttsx on an ActiveState blog post.

I couldn’t get it to pip install using pip-3.2 but worked fine installed as a python2 package.

By this time it was getting late in the day, so I opted to really put the hack in hackday and have the Game object write each game to a file then call a sys shell to run the “” script (not exactly a best practises implementation). As the system call is blocking, and will wait for the say script to finish, I removed all of the previous sleep statements so the say script then became rate limiting step. Finally I needed to show the office my handiwork. Running the app is done by just running the screen code with a python3 prompt. If you’ve followed the instructions so far the one liner below should silently run it as log as your terminal sessions remains open.

First I demonstrated its application as a “wearable” using a mobile phone powerpack, some elastic bands and a pair of crowdscores branded gloves. Then showed its versatility by plugging it into a TV and having it announce the scores for all to hear.

I found that sometimes the pyttsx library wouldn’t work unless I had hard set the sound device as either HDMI or 3.5mm jack in the raspi-config settings.
